Humanities Courses in IITs: Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination of IIT-Chennai on 20th April, 2014

IITs are the most prestigious institutes in the world to offer engineering education. According to the trends, the institutes are also adding additional courses to their curriculum. IITs now want their students to be aware of the society and not only limited to their educations. Thus they are offering humanities courses also.

Chennai: Professional courses have more demand in India and students prefer to join engineering, medical and other professional courses. Indian Institute of Technology’s recognized the importance of teaching the students about history, heritage, human relations and responsibility towards society and is offering humanities courses. BITS-Pilani, NIT are also offering courses such as English, Psychology, Economics, Philosophy and sociology.

New technological developments are making the world mechanical. There is a need to get awareness of society and human relations around us. Education system should give importance to descriptive and normative things also similar to US liberal education system. This idea inspired technical institutes such as IITs to introduce humanities courses. These courses help the students to understand about society, responsibility, history, human relations and many other things.

History, economics, development studies, languages, philosophy, literature, law, sociology, religion, culture, arts, anthropology, communication, psychology subjects come under humanities courses. Almost all IITS, BITS-Pilani, Indian School of Mines are offering economics, languages, philosophy, psychology and sociology subjects. When IITs were launched, humanities courses were not given importance as the institutes were meant to provide technical education to the students.

Few IITS made humanities compulsory in their regular curriculum but are offering some subjects as optional. This helps the students to increase awareness about the world around them. These humanities subjects are offered in interdisciplinary method. This method is followed by almost all IITs. These courses are offered n post graduation and PhD levels.

Admissions for Bachelor and MSc integrated level humanities courses are done through JEE-Advanced. IIT-Madras will give admissions based on Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance examinations. HSEE notification for the year 2014 is already released and the details of PhD, MPhil and post graduate courses can be obtained from the websites of institutes.

Online registration for Admissions for humanities courses in IIT-Madras begins on December 18, 2014. Last date for submitting online applications is January 17. Last date for paying exam fee is January 24. Last date for accepting applications through post is January 27. Humanities and social sciences entrance examination will be held on April 20, 2014.
