Suchitra Sen, Indian Greta Garbo, Dada Saheb Phalke Awardee Died at 82
Suchitra Sen, veteran Bengali actress passed away in Kolkata today. Suchitra Sen was 82 and is survived by a daughter and two granddaughters. She won many awards including, Padma Sri and Dada Saheb Phalke award.
Kolkata: Bengali veteran actress Suchitra Sen died today in Kolkata. She was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders since few days. She was being treated in Belle vue hospital in Kolkata since December 23, 2013. Her condition became serious on 3rd of this month and she was shifted to critical care unit. She was given ventilator support. Suchitra Sen is the mother of famous Bengali actress Moon Moon sen and her granddaughters are Rhea and Rima.
Suchitra Sen began his career in 1952 and was awarded Dada Saheb Phalke award in 2005. She was one of the top actresses of Bengali films and was honoured with Padma Sri in 1972. She bid goodbye to her acting career in 1970. She even acted in many Hindi movies such as Bombai ka Babu, Mamta, Devdas and Andhi. Her acting in Bengali movie Devdas was well appreciated by the audience and critics. Her last movie was Pranay Basha in 1978.
Suchitra Sen received best actress award for her role in Devdas. She also acted in Bollywood film Aandhi which was made with the life story of Indira Gandhi. She was the first Bengali actress to receive an award in International film festivals. She won best actress award for her role in Saptapadi at Moscow film festival. Kolkata government gave Banga Vibhushan award to Suchitra.
Suchitra Sen was 82 and is survived by her daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters Riya and Raima. She suffered cardiac arrest and passed away today morning at 8.25 am. She acted in more than 60 films. She will be accorded gun salute at the funeral at Keoratala Crematorium in South Kolkata. The actress is compared to Hollywood Actor Great Garbo.
Suchitra Sen was born on April 6, 1931 and her father was Karunamoy Dasgupta and mother was Indira Devi. She married Dibanath Sen in 1947. Her daughter is Moon Moon Sen who later on became one of the finest actresses of Bengali films. She acted in many films opposite Uttam Kumar.
