Future Of ‘Aadhar’: Post Moving Of Nandan Nilekani To Politics
Aadhaar project head NN has moved into politics to contest Bangalore MP Seat. Now the status of Aadhaar project is un-clear and the citizens of India are expecting a suitable reply from some responsible government agency.
New Delhi: The much hyped program of Government of India (GoI), through the Unique ID authority of India for providing unique number for every citizen of India is the ADHAAR card. This project was headed by Nandan Nilekani from Infosys. According to unconfirmed reports, huge amount (running in to crores of rupees) has been spent on this project.
NN might have succeeded in Infosys venture, but his pet project, i.e., The Aadhaar Project, from the beginning, has been eliciting no positive response. First it was the non-transparent procedure for obtaining the Aadhaar card, then the appointment of credible agencies for capturing the personal data for providing the card, then follows the uncertainty regarding status of Aadhaar, the postal department’s inability to handle such large volumes of cards for home delivery.
Even without 50% of target of issue of cards, Government of India linked Aadhaar to subsidy schemes and this linking has proved to be another mega failure. The unwanted confidentiality regarding Aadhaar’s linkage to subsidy schemes including LPG subsidy has raged lot of resistance and keeping in view the coming elections, GoI declared ‘removal of aadhaar linkage to LPS subsidy’.
Even now GoI is yet to come open on the exact status of Aadhaar as to how many actual Aadhaar cards have been issued & delivered to the real owner and the success rate of its linking to various subsidy schemes. The LPG subsidy misuse during the linkage period itself runs into crores of rupees and who is responsible for this and how the money will be refunded back to the genuine consumers is a big question mark.
Now that NN is into politics (to contest Bangalore MP Seat on Congress ticket), the status of Aadhaar project is to be clarified by some responsible government agencies. The clarification should also contain replies to various doubts/queries relating to aadhaar linkage misuse. It is evident that the present UPA government in election mood has no intention to clarify Aadhaar project to the satisfaction of the people of India. We may have to wait for the next government to form & stabilize for getting this genuine response.
