Is Amethi Cause Of Worry For Congress?
Amethi constituency in UP has been one of the most trusted constituencies for the ruling party. The constituency has continuously sent Gandhi clan to Lok Sabha. This time the wave is not purely in favor of congress.
Lucknow: Sonia Gandhi facing real trouble in the present elections. On one hand, the entire country is showing anti-congress wave and on the other hand, the most obedient Amethi is also posing threat to congress clan.
The constituency of Amethi in UP has been in favor of congress since its beginning 1967 with the exception of 2 terms where Janata wave seen Ravindra Pratap Singh as its MP In 1987 and other non congress MP from this constituency was Dr. Sanjay Singh on BJP ticket during 1998-99.
After Sanjay Gandhi’s ground work the constituency has been considered as safest bet for congress leaders as the people of Amethi chose Rajiv Gandhi, Satish Sharma, Sonia Gandhi & Rahul Gandhi in succession (all belonging to congress).
Rahul has been representing Amethi for the last 2 terms and he is seeking hat-trick victory from the same seat.
Despite the past support from Amethi people, the development in this area has not been up to the mark. Roads, electricity, water everything is a problem. The ruling congress completely ignored this constituency as per the criticism posed by the political opponents.
This time, the strong Modi-wave throughout the country is also likely to affect the winning chances of Rahul. The threat is coming in the form of TV actress Smriti Irani from BJP. Her ‘homely’ appearance can make Rahul to go for a run. Already many activists of RSS are in the constituency working hard for win of BJP candidate.
Another threat to Rahul’s victory is coming in the form Kumar Viswas from Aam Aadmi Party. Viswas has been camping in the constituency in a rented house and has been campaigning mentioning he is the real ‘local’ person and hence he needs to be supported. AAP leader Arvind Kezriwal also conducted some road shows in support of candidature of Kumar Viswas.
Despite the challenges posed by opposition, the congress is confident of Rahul’s hat-trick victory from this seat in view of 1) the support the constituency has been showing to congress from the beginning, 2) Sonia’s recent public rally which the first of its kind in the last 10 years, 3) Rahul’s sister Priyanka’s continuous campaigning for her brother, 4) Lesser popularity of BJP candidate & 5) Lesser acceptance of AAP.
The constituency is going to vote on 7th May and the future of Rahul’s expected hat-trick victory would be known on 16th May 2014.
