Rights Of Women Under UPA
The UPA has been able to show its political tactics in regard to women bill as well.
New Delhi: The election manifesto of the congress has been constantly mentioning one item without fail i.e., women reservation bill. With Sonia at the helm of affairs as UPA chair person, the people (especially women in this country) were expecting that the bill would get cleared in the Parliament. The party, on the other hand, has been able to promote some women to highest positions like President of India (Smt. Pratibha Patil), Lok Sabha Speaker (Meera Kumar) etc.
People were expecting similar preferential treatment by congress to women reservation bill as well. However, to the utter dis-satisfaction of the people, the ruling party and alliance did not find suitable circumstances and time to get this bill cleared. During the highest ever tension observed in the Parliament, the ruling alliance could find ways to clear the T-Bill.
Continuing their age old practice, congress once again mentioned women’s bill in the current manifesto as well. Rahul went a step ahead and promised 25% reservation for women in police department.
Continuing the congress’ dubious stand on rights to women, Rahul in his latest public meeting at Varanasi (where Narendra Modi is contesting as an MP on BJP ticket) did mention the issue of ‘snoop gate’. He was advising Modi to respect the women.
While on the subject, it is worth recollecting that the ruling UPA mentioned that they would be appointing a committee on 16th May evening, to investigate the snoopgate. The BJP immediately responded to this declaration that the new government would be more appropriate to take a decision in this regard. Subsequently, the government had to withdraw its earlier decision in this regard.
Reacting the allegations by congress on ‘snoopgate’, Modi government in Gujarat already constituted an enquiry commission in this issue. The central government wanted the Supreme Court to constitute another SIT and also remove the commission appointed by the Modi government in Gujarat. The Supreme Court in unequivocal terms refused to ‘stay’ the proceedings of the commission appointed by Modi Government.
Before attacking Modi and advising him to respect women, Congress is required to show its commitment to protect interests of women population of this country. As per the official statistics, the Indian population of 2011 has 127.02 crores where women account for 61.43 crores and men 65.59 crores.
The government has not also been able to improve the sex ratio which is currently at 943 females for every 1000 male populations. The figure is different for different states, however, there is a huge difference in male and female population which the government should have attended and ensured to rectify the anomaly.
