Human Rights Day in 2014 is on 10th December
Respecting human rights is the primary duty of the mankind. A step initiated in this direction by UN is proclamation of UDHR and celebration of Human Rights Day on 10th December every year (starting from 1950 the year in which the UDHR was approved).
Washington: We are all aware that every human being takes birth with certain rights like education, social life and acquisition of wealth in legal way etc. And this rule is applicable universally without any exceptions. For the rights of one person to be protected, it is essential that the same are recognized, respected by other fellow population. In contrast to the above general rule, many people are under-privileged due to discrimination exercised by other sections of the society in some form or the other. The UN has taken a major step to rectify some evils of the in-equality through Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The UN General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the much acclaimed Universal Declaration of Human Rights (the most translated document in the world) on 10th December 1950 and from that day onwards Human Rights Day is observed every year. This is a global observance but is not a public holiday.
The theme for the celebration each year differs. Example - “UniversalDeclaration ofHuman Rights” (2012) & “20 YEARS: WORKING FOR YOUR RIGHTS” (2013).
Celebrated throughout the globe, the day is normally marked both by high level political conferences & meetings. On this day many events are organized to educate people, (especially children & teenagers) on their human rights & importance of upholding the same in their own communities. Cultural programs are also organized to celebrate the importance of human rights. UN price in the field of Human rights & Nobel Peace Prize are also awarded on this day (to give due respect to this day). Governmental and non governmental organizations in addition to many civil and social cause organizations organize special events to commemorate the day
In the genre of human rights, UNESCO has been working promote and display human rights research; to advocate education in human rights; to take action and combat against all kind of discrimination at regional, national and international level; to promote coordination among all actors and social networks; and to advocate democracy.
